Portuguese Fado Music Performance

 Enjoy an evening of traditional Portuguese Fado – a traditional form of music characterized by melancholic and nostalgic themes. Believed to have developed in the port districts of Lisbon in the early 1800s and influenced by a variety of musical style including Brazilian modinhas and African rhythms, Fado was originally performed in taverns and other informal settings.  

Registration recommended as space is limited. $14.50 + HST General, $12.33 + HST, PAMA Member.

About the Artists: 

Simon Arruda is a "guitarrista do fado" and passionate educator dedicated to preserving and sharing the beauty of Fado music. With a deep connection to Portuguese culture, Simon blends traditional instrumental Fados with contemporary arrangements, offering a fresh yet authentic perspective on this cherished musical form. Whether performing at events or inspiring students through teaching, he strives to connect people to the emotional depth and cultural significance of Fado while bridging tradition and modernity to ensure its legacy endures for future generations. 

Pedro Joel is a Portuguese-born musician, embarked on his Canadian journey in 2006. Since then, he's graced stages across Canada, collaborating with a myriad of artists. His music bridges cultures, blending his Portuguese heritage with the diverse sounds of Canada, captivating audiences with his soulful melodies and vibrant performances. 

Jennifer Bettencourt is a Luso-Canadian fadista that accidentally, but happily, tumbled into the world of fado after attempting to push it away for most of her life. Ever since walking through that door, fado is all she thinks about and she's never looked back. She began singing fado professionally in the early 2010's and since then has had the privilege of opening for acclaimed artists like Ângelo Freire, Rodrigo Costa Félix, Marta Pereira da Costa, and Nathalie Pires.
